Italy,
Tuscany,
Beautiful in terms of evolution, it’s clearly a wine with a lot of maturity; there’s absolutely nothing red left in here; well there’s a slight brick tawny colour, with a quite pale rim indicating something like 15 or 20 or 25 years. Beautiful nose, there’s a great deal of complexity going on here. It’s still pure I would say, without oxidation or volatility or other things that can stain mature wines. We have dried fruit here but still a good presence of fruit, which I think is a quality in a wine with evolution. I would talk rather about some dried cherry, plum rather prune, and an overall quite sweet sensation. Then to that I would add cedar wood, tobacco, spice box, and a very good intensity as well. Very good grip on the palate; powerful, yet after these years it has really rounded off the edges, we still have a slight core of tannin but they’re rather polished today, it’s more like cocoa powder. Bold in terms of texture, but it’s all now finely polished, like a massive piece from the beginning that has rounded off the edges. Once again I encounter that dark cherry fruit with tobacco, a cedar-infused kind of spiciness; so very intense. Very civilized wine I would say, because it’s a perfect pedigree right now, I don’t think this is a wine that will evolve much more, it has reached that peak of perfect drinkability now. Very powerful, with a great length and a great level of complexity. A wine that makes me think of something with generous amounts of truffle, a nice creamy risotto with freshly-grated truffle or something gamey like a pigeon with truffle or anything with truffle! Great.
